In their annual trend report, Pinterest reported that the number of in-app searches for the term “pins and patches” increased 800% in 2016! That percentage is staggering!
But, if you think about it, you’d be hard-pressed to go to a Starbucks or Target and not see tons of people wearing an enamel pin or patch. At Sunshine Sam, our “Flair” section is one of our most popular!
In Montclair, where Sunshine Sam is located, people want to express themselves outside of just writing a post online, particularly when it comes to politics. Placing a pin or patch on your clothes or bag is a tangible way to broadcast your opinion.
But the desire for self-expression goes way beyond pins and patches. Adults are happily trading their fancy key chains for motel-style ones that quote Jaws, The Gilmore Girls or Goonies, and purchasing totes with inspirational quotes.
Basically, we’re yearning for the people around us to know what we’re about. And, you know what, I think this is a really good thing!
Wearing our political beliefs, feelings, things that make us laugh, or a yearning for an old TV show literally on our sleeves starts conversation and real-life interaction. It stimulates the local economy and the artisans that make these products.
Then, sure, go ahead and take a selfie and post your purchases on-line and continue the conversation in the virtual world! It’s not going anywhere!
P.S. Sunshine Sam carries Flair from all over the world. Come check it out. If we don’t have something you’re looking for, we are happy to track it down for you!
